I get a lot of questions similar to; 'should I trade _____ for ______'. This is an effort to help you with those decisions. If you've been holding out for your favorite player to turn it around or didn't want to make any moves until you saw how your team would shake out, this is your last chance to get those players that provide the statistics you're lacking. Been sitting on Adrian Gonzalez but really need another good SP? Go ahead and deal him for Felix Hernandez or Madison Bumgarner. Or have a hole at 3rd? deal him for Zimmerman or Encarnacion. He may have been ranked much higher than these guys prior to the season, but that was a long time ago - time to reevaluate.
I know why many places just keep a running list of the top 20 or 50 players as making a new list of the top 300 was no easy task. There may be instances where you say 'how can you have ____ ranked ahead of ____', but I'm comfortable with the list and I feel it is directionally accurate especially if you go position by position. Anyway, here are some thoughts; (click to keep reading and see the Top 300 list)
-At first I had a hard time ranking Trout, a rookie, in the top 10. However; after I looked at his stat line and realized his production has been steady since his call up it was hard not to put him where I did. If I'm starting a 2nd half 2012 team, I'd love to start it with Trout.
-There are a number of guys with injuries which made it tough to slot them in; Kemp, Longoria, Pedrioa, Tulowitzki, Crawford, etc. I tried to rank them based on the information we have, but depending on their rehab they could move way up, way down or off the list altogether.
-The pitchers...Although some pitchers have been lights out so far in 2012, I don't have any going in the 'first round' in my rankings. I think it is still easier to get good pitching later in the draft...R.A. Dickey - He was very tough to rank. On one hand he has had a historically good 1st half and he was also pretty good for most of 2011. On the other hand he's a knuckle baller and sometimes they go through slumps that last a number of starts. Overall, I have him ranked #40 (4th round) and the 11th SP and I'd feel comfortable enough with him as my ace...Finally I have a number of SP ranked that are currently in the minors. They are all ranked from ~275-300 so I'm basically pointing out that many pitchers at the bottom of these rankings or at the back end of the draft are similar, so keep an eye out for these young guys who could have an impact (also remember rookie pitchers tend to struggle much more than hitters).
I had so much fun making the new Top 300 list that I'm ready to go out and start making some trade offers! and maybe even join a 2nd half league. Enjoy...
